Selamat Sambut Hari Merdeka

It's the eve of Merdeka. Unlike thousands of other Malaysians who throng the streets to celebrate the occasion, my little family stays quietly at home. I was in KL for a meeting and went back with hubby. At 5.15 sharp we left EPF and thank God tak jam sangat. We were thinking of watching the fireworks at Putrajaya again - it's the Japanese team's turn sure best - but then it rained and I'm pretty sure that nice picnic spot must be wet and puddled.

Years ago when I was very young -Form 4 - I was part of my school's team to do formation during Merdeka celebration. That was the last few years before Dataran Merdeka was transformed like it is now. Dulu it was a just simple field. It was really fun. All Form 4 students at my hostel actually performed coincidently though we all came from different schools. The KL students from CBN and BBGS did the logo formation (Linda, my good friend/staff included). They were the ones who did the Malaysian flag, the year's logo, etc. Anybody remembered that Proton Saga car with the wheels moving. They did that too! Those who wore dark blue tracksuit did the wheels. They actually ran around in circles.

We from Sri Aman did this other formation along with Assunta girls. It was a bit funny actually. Some combination of dance and exercise and gymrama and dunno what. We wore this red and yellow costume with long skirt holding a stick that had pom-poms on each end. My team wore red. Berkilat-kilat... Selalu kena ejek dengan KL students - that the PJ students dance using toilet brush.

We practiced for months, all of us were really dark because we practiced in the mornings until 11. Yang best, we didn't really study for like 3 months. It was practice, practice, practice. I was sure the teachers had severe headaches because there were hundreds of us and getting us to syncronise our steps and create formations were really challenging. Imagine - handling hundreds of teenage girls. Sapa tak pening.

But it was a good experience. We were so proud to be part of the whole celebration. It was an honour performing in front of the VVIPs and thousands, and thousands of spectators.

Lepas tu setelah bebas dari pakai that awful red costume, we hostel girls grouped together and attacked the artists yang joined the perbarisan. Zaman-zaman tu tengah hot rock songs. So we all pegi la jumpa all those famous rock groups like Search, etc and I remember jumpa Rahim Maarof (heheh... minat gila dulu), and his bass guitarist called Eddiejai who was so so cute who actually rajin tulis surat kat I. (Don't play-play, I corresponded with a handsome guitarist from a rock group tau). If you want to know how he looked like - imagine Aaron Kwok when he was younger. That cute. Hmmm... Lepas tu we all went around KL till petang before going back to the hostel.

One thing I remember until now was that when we reach our hostel (our group was so naughty back then we were called to the pengetua's office every other day), we saw these stacks of mattresses in parking lot. They were thrown from upstairs. Apparently, while we were at the celebration, the pengetua and warden did a spot check and found that our wanted group had brought down the mattresses to the floor of our room, put them together because that night we stayed up, played games and borak-borak till morning. Nasib baik tak hujan, so dengan muka tebalnya angkat balik the heavy mattress naik bilik tingkat 2.

Anyway, selamat menyambut hari kemerdekaan to all Malaysians. Semoga kita semua merdekakan minda dari sifat-sifat negatif, merdekakan hati dari sifat-sifat dengki dan merdekakan diri to become better persons.
